Housewife and Mother
Not enough time
to bake and cook,
play a game or
read that book.
Not enough time
to do the mending,
ironing, laundry,
chores unending.
Not enough time
to teach home school,
clean the house, and
enforce the rules.
“Not enough time!”
my constant song,
though I know
this focus, wrong.
Plenty of time
for self-control,
as I live out
my maternal role!
Plenty of time
to encourage, pray,
even though
I’m busy all day.
Plenty of time
to kiss and bless
creativity in the
midst of mess!
Plenty of time
to laugh and smile,
to be an example
all the while.
Just a few things
must get done, like
loving and honoring
God’s only Son.

I home schooled our four children until the eldest child entered high school and the youngest (twins) were in fifth grade, largely because of my husband’s insistence. While home schooling, I often felt overwhelmed with my responsibilities and wondered what excitement I was missing, “in the real world.” I wrote this poem during that time, in an attempt to gain perspective.
While I’m thankful I had the opportunity to spend more time with the kids while they were young, I’m not sure I would do it that way again if I had the chance. Both public and private schools have much to offer children.
I might have enjoyed working full-time in some career or ministry, as I did before I had children. However, working mothers outside the home are just as busy as working mothers inside the home, just in a different way. Only you know what’s best for you and your family.
