Your Average Autumn Tree
Looking through my reading glasses
Your average autumn tree has become
a delightful impressionist painting!
Blurry green, red, and orange highlights
overlap each other, skip
and play in the light breeze.
Sunlight bounces from branch to branch
like fat paint splotches—
sitting, dripping, glistening.
The wall and window make a perfect frame.
I’d like to hang you in
my living room, all year ‘round.

If you wear glasses to read, you know what happens when you look up from your reading material to see who just walked into the room. That person is super blurry!
Well, if you’ve never tried blurring your vision on purpose before, you should try it when looking at fall colors! That’s what I did one day when I looked out of the window at the library with my reading glasses still in place. It was lovely. Or, if you wear reading glasses but it isn’t autumn, try taking them off and then looking at this poem’s photo with your now blurry vision. Then, you will have a similar “impressionist painting” to enjoy.
