Empty Promise

The trees have flipped their
 shadows in the yard

Rooms on the dark side of the house
are now lit up

The clock reverses its hands
 in empathy while

The earth pretends to be still.

I feel just the same as I did
this morning and afternoon

Life will always be
 as it is right now

Time is an illusion
 The moment promises.

But, shadows don’t lie.

If you happen to glance casually at the face of an analogue clock at 9:15 in the morning and 2:45 in the afternoon, the hands are pointing at the 9 and the 3 both times. Just different hands. Same thing at 12:30 and 6:00, etc. You might be tempted to think time has stood still. You might wish it could on certain days.

But, if you look out your window at the shadow of the tree in the yard at those two times on a sunny day, you’ll see a silent witness to the rotation of the earth, the linear passing of time— approaching new events and reseeding finished ones. Time is fleeting. Use your minutes well.
