Merciful Friends

People with the gift of mercy
are my favorite friends,
Smiles, hugs, and calming words,
patience without end.

Occasions for your mercy work
increase in huge supply...
Because the wounds and cares of life,
with age, do multiply.

I’m grateful for your gentle tongue,
for humor, faith and hope.
You rescue me, like Jesus does
and give me strength to cope.

Do you have a friend who is merciful? I certainly hope so. I am fortunate to have several merciful friends. You can recognize them by certain characteristics. First and foremost, they are good listeners, they validate your feelings. They sympathize and help you calm down without shaming you or trying to fix your problems for you. They empower you to come up with your own healthy steps going forward. And, here’s another question. “Am I a merciful friend to others? Or, am I a ‘fixer,’ telling a friend what to do?” The former is usually more helpful when it comes to relationship problems.
