Laugh at Myself

Laugh at myself. Go ahead.
It’s okay. In fact, it’s good!
It’s not cynicism; it’s medicine, modeling.

I’m practicing perspective.
Consuming happiness.
Not taking myself so seriously.

Laugh at my own jokes! It’s not egotistical.
I’ll get a break from the struggle.
Maybe I’ll make you smile... maybe not.

Life can be rough, so change the tone.
Maybe I’ll convince you...
Don’t take yourself so seriously.

When I was younger, I couldn’t laugh at myself. If I made a dumb mistake, or if someone pointed out that I was wrong or had said something stupid, I would react with anger, self-justification and often, lying. “That’s not my fault!” “I didn’t do that!” “That’s not what I said!” and so on.

Laughing at ourselves is a strength. It requires honesty, maturity and humility to admit our faults and mistakes. But the surprise is that laughter and honesty actually endear us to others versus estranging ourselves through obvious-to-everyone mistakes and lies.
