Old Familiar Friend
I found a new source of grounding today.
Something familiar,
Unremarkable,
Inanimate,
Uncomplaining.
Its predecessors have been my companions
for the last thirty years of my life.
It’s comfortable.
Accommodating.
Reliable.
Adaptable.
Prefers my music,
but will put up with the music tastes
of my children when required.
It holds many memories.
It’s my favorite color.
Makes me feel at home.
Makes me look younger.
Makes me feel normal.
Fools me into thinking nothing
has changed all that much.
The kids will be back to visit soon.
They will bring their suitcases,
spouses, children
or significant others.
So, you see, it is still necessary
to have this old minivan that seats 6 to 8
the other 351 days
when they’re not here.

Should I downsize to a sedan? I don’t think so! My minivan seems to “ground” me as much as the house and town I’m living in or the church I’m attending. Although inanimate objects are nowhere near as important as friends and family, they can provide sure footing and comfort when circumstances are difficult or relationships are turbulent. Even when they aren’t, my surroundings can be a comfort when I’m away from the special people in my life.
