Prayer is Like…

Prayer is like an explanation.
Sometimes it’s detailed, sometimes it’s vague.
Sometimes it’s a relief, sometimes it’s an excuse.

Prayer is like sleep.
Sometimes it’s refreshing, sometimes it’s restless.
Sometimes it’s deep, sometimes it’s light.

Prayer is like a routine.
Sometimes it’s natural, sometimes it’s coached.
Sometimes it’s a burden, sometimes it’s a choice.

Prayer is like a friendship.
Sometimes it speaks, sometimes it listens.
Sometimes it gives, sometimes it receives.

Prayer is like love.
Sometimes it laughs, sometimes it cries.
Sometimes it’s exciting, sometimes it’s boring.

Prayer is like poetry.
Sometimes it’s encouraging, sometimes it’s not.
Sometimes you understand it, sometimes you don’t.

Prayer is like life.
Sometimes it’s fun, sometimes it’s work.
Sometimes it’s with others, sometimes it’s in solitude.

Prayer is like eating.
Some answers are sweet, some answers are sour.
Some fill you up, some leave you still hungry.

Prayer is like a vacation.
Sometimes the best part is just getting away.
Sometimes the best part is just the company.

How do you describe prayer? What is the right way to pray? How do I make my prayers sound as fancy as the pastor’s prayers? Well, believe me, when the pastor is at home alone, his prayers are (or should be) just as messy and honest as yours and mine. Prayer is saying anything you want to say or not say to God.
