The Fence
On this fence
again, I sit.
In vain I strive
to get off of it.
In mind and body
the battle rages—
Reminding me
of sin’s wages. ¹
“Life and peace” ²
call from one side.
“There is joy and fruit,
for all who here abide.” ³
“Empty promises!”
Satan chides.
“Stand up for your rights!
Climb down to our side.”
Who can deliver
this slave-child, me?
God’s Son will indeed
set this captive free! ⁴
So, death to self,
the flesh, and despair—
Vault the fence!
Jesus is there!

Often, in the life of faith, we encounter crossroads to choose between, or fences we should vault. Whether major paradigm shifts, or small but critical choices, it is always true that Jesus wants to help us and show more of Himself to us. However, my choices will influence whether or not that happens. Jesus first wants to know if I really love Him. As a Christian, if I depend only on my own understanding, or choose my own will and way, I will sacrifice intimacy with Jesus. Yet, what could possibly be wiser than, or worth more than more of Jesus, who sacrificed everything for me?
“Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” Jesus, in John 14:21 NIV.
