Sailing Through Life

“Wind in your sails” comes
from wanting to learn,
helping others
 and taking turns.

Change tacks if you
make a mistake.
Set a new course,
 for goodness’ sake.

To ride out a storm,
 reduce your sails.
Rest below deck
and read tall tales.

Enjoy the cruise,
 sunset and sunrise,
the ports you will visit,
 the sea gulls’ cries.

You have love and gifts
 to share with the world.
They will carry you far—
 like a sail unfurled.

I attended a private girls’ school for my last three years of high school. It was my parents decision, and I didn’t really want to change schools and leave my friends. However, I did make new friends and it all worked out. Also, it was good for me, because I was pushed to work and study harder than I had at the public school.

My alma mater recently reached out to the women in my graduating class and asked us to write a letter to the students of the class of 2034. I did write a letter and I also composed this poem to go with it, as part of their “Pen Pal Project.” But of course, the poem’s message could apply to anyone, even if you’re not a sailor.
