What Life is About…
Is life about achievements,
A vacation, or a job?
Is life about survival—
An early grave to rob?
Are we here to teach our kids
How to grow up, work and die—
So that they can do the same?
To the “rat race” all comply?
No, no! Life is not just
A routine to perform—
Or, a scheme to “get ahead”
As we to the world, conform.
There is a higher standard,
A goal for which to strive—
A daily task to do, and
With all my heart contrive…
To shower tenderness upon
Each person whom I meet.
As I listen, talk or help,
Grace and love, my work completes.
Is this not what Saint Paul said?
All true greatness comes from love. ¹
Jesus said all acts of kindness
Are rewarded up above. ²
Yes! This gives life a sweetness
Which hardships cannot erase.
When someone gives unselfishly,
Their gift is never a waste.
And life is more than giving,
Even more than doing good.
It is caring about people
From the heart, as Jesus would.
Lord, help me really live
And do what life is about:
To lift up others, serve with joy,
To love ‘til my strength gives out.
